Food & Water
The Tokay Gecko will eat insects, baby mice and baby rats. Crickets, mealworms super worms and butter worms make good feeder insects. Make sure to dust the insects with a multi-vitamin supplement containing calcium. Young Tokays should be fed daily and adults every other day. Leave a dish with water in the enclosure at all times as Geckos need constant hydration. Ensure that the water is clean and is changed every day. They will also lick the water off of the plants and other surfaces in the enclosure, to maintain this spray the enclosure once a day with a light mist. This can also be achieved by placing ice cubes at the top of the enclosure, as they melt the Gecko will lap this water up.
Lighting, Temperature & Humidity
The temperature should be kept between 77 degrees F to 85 degrees F. At night, the temperature should be kept between 68 degrees F to 77 degrees F, this can be done either using a nocturnal reptile or ceramic heat element. Keep the humidity between 70% – 90%. Direct sunlight (not through glass) is recommended for natural vitamins.
Housing
It is best to use a square enclosure, with a minimum of 16″ x 16″ x 16″. Glass aquariums work fine, but there has to be a completely screen top. You could also use an all screen enclosure to promote air circulation. With multiple Tokay Geckos, you will need a minimum 32″ x 16″ x 16″. Place branches throughout the cage for the Gecko to climb over. You can use real plants, but it is not mandatory. It isn’t recommended to house 2 males together as they can become aggressive.
